Great coffee should not be wasted by bad extraction. Use these simple guides to dial in better flavor, better balance, and a more consistent cup at home.

Espresso

  • Grind fine, similar to powdered sugar.
  • Start with 18 grams of coffee.
  • Yield about 36 grams of liquid espresso.
  • If the shot runs fast, grind finer.
  • If the shot runs slow, grind coarser.

Pour Over

  • Use a medium-fine grind.
  • Try 20 grams coffee to 320 grams water.
  • Bloom for about 30 seconds.
  • Pour slowly and evenly in stages.
  • Adjust grind or pour speed for clarity.

Drip Coffee

  • Use a medium grind.
  • Use filtered water whenever possible.
  • Keep water around 200°F.
  • If coffee tastes weak, add more coffee.
  • If coffee tastes bitter, grind coarser.

French Press

  • Use a coarse grind.
  • Add coffee first, then water.
  • Stir gently to saturate all grounds.
  • Press slowly with steady pressure.
  • Serve immediately to avoid bitterness.
